The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the people of Buganda to embrace responsible citizenship by safeguarding their cultural heritage, respecting the beliefs and traditions of others, and rejecting attempts to revive religious conflicts.
Speaking at Bulange, Mengo, during the handover of the Kingdom's annual Oluwalo contribution worth more than Shs139 million, Mayiga said religious wars belong to the past and should not be rekindled, particularly through social media.
"Religious conflicts ended long ago. Everyone has a responsibility to respect other people's cultures and beliefs. We must stop insulting, mocking, and criticizing things we do not fully understand," Mayiga said.
The Katikkiro emphasized that every loyal subject of the Kabaka has a duty to support and protect the Buganda Kingdom, noting that the annual Oluwalo is a symbol of commitment, loyalty, and responsibility towards the Kingdom and the Kabaka.
The ceremony was attended by the Kabaka's representatives from several counties, including Mumyuka Mpenja, Ssaabaddu Maddu, Ssaabawaali Kyegonza, Ssaabagabo Kabulasoke, Ssaabawaali Kaliiro, Mumyuka Nakifuma, the Mengo Municipal leadership, Musaale Busukuma, and representatives from various schools.
Meanwhile, the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Local Governments, Joseph Kawuki, urged the Kabaka's subjects to actively participate in the forthcoming LC I elections, saying strong local leadership is essential for effective governance and community development.
"We encourage all Buganda subjects to participate in electing their village leaders because strong local leadership is essential for effective governance," Kawuki said.
County leaders also used the occasion to brief the Katikkiro on the challenges they face in executing their responsibilities within their respective counties.
